Barber Shop

Some things should go without saying. But with some students...

"Put the electric clippers away."

These students? Instead of complying, they had to double down. The boy turned the clippers on...

"Would you like me to cut your hair?"

He took no for an answer the third time. He handed the clippers back to their owner. Who then turned them on...

"Turn that off. Put it away. If you can't leave it put away I'll have to confiscate it."

Still, I watched them. These are the types of students that would then take the clippers back out because they found some sort of loophole in what I had said. Or, they'd create a loophole.

Did they really plan to shave their heads in class? Unlikely, but considering what else they got up to, I wouldn't've put it past them. (Curious about what else they got up to? Tune in tomorrow...)

For the record: yes, I could have confiscated the clippers the minute I saw them. I did not primarily because I didn't want to deal with the drama that would have inevitably followed. But if they had kept up with it, it then would have been worth it to get it out of their hands.

  1. This reminds me of a Subaru commercial (yes, I actually saw an ad despite the use of our DVR ~grin~). The father confiscates clippers from an older sister heading toward the younger, whose seated on a stool in the backyard with a sheet around her shoulders. It made me laugh, but I never dreamed you would ever see a similar scenario!

    1. When I worked retail, a common refrain was, "I never thought I'd see that..." And yet, a couple months later, something else would top it. Same in subbing.

    1. Eeek. Yeah. This is why it behooves us adults to pay attention to what the kiddos are doing. Because sometimes they do stupid stuff like this.

  4. I would never have made a good teacher. I would have had to take those away from them. Course....only after they were allowed to cut their own hair, if they had to pull them out, they should be allowed to use them on their selves! I would probably insisted! haha

    1. Oh, they would have been down with cutting their own hair. Too bad it would have made a mess.

(Confiscating something is so much more trouble than it's worth sometimes. It's a battle, and they the kiddos whine about getting their stuff back. And that's only if they don't get on about how you can't "take their stuff". This is why I only go for the big guns when they make it necessary.)

  5. If a student had brought electric clippers to any of my old schools, they would've been taken away immediately.

    1. I could have. And then turned it in to the summer school principal. I would have if he had taken those clippers out again.

  10. Would this have been considered an unsafe item to bring to school? I can't imagine anyone bringing electric clippers to school, LOL :)

  11. That's pretty bizarre. What's next? Battery-operated toothbrush?

  12. Oh, the good ole days when you could walk up, jerk the clippers away and smack 'em for back talk. LOL

  14. When I was young I never knew of any kid bringing in a razor or anything like it...very odd and weird. My tendency would have been to take it away and if they grumbled, put it on the floor and stomp on it. I know you can't do it which is why I would have been fired long ago.

    1. It's not a razor. A razor is a weapon and would have been treated as such.

  15. Perhaps you'd rather see the Swiffer commercial with the young "hair stylist". Alana ramblinwitham.blogspot.com

  16. What on earth were they doing with electric clippers. I would almost consider that as a weapon. I would have notified the principal!

    1. Considering some of the stuff I've seen them bring, this was rather tame. In retrospect, perhaps I should have contacted him.

  17. *sigh* Those kids sound terrible.

I was going to ask how the parents didn't know they brought it to school, but the other day one of the kids I watch brought her iphone to the pool without my knowing. I bet you can guess what happened. Of course, it didn't happen in the way I would have expected it to. Instead, bubbles in her bag spilled. But still. :(
